We came across this chest rub recipe in Calm Kids, by Jennifer Jefferies. It’s a great one to have on hand these cooler months and perfect to rub on the kids at nightime when they’re suffering with a cold, flu or sinusitis. Great for the grown ups of course too, and much safer than the petroleum based chest rubs on the market.
Chest Rub Recipe
For kids over the age of 12 and adults, double the amount of essential oils. To use in a diffuser, use the same oils without the base oil. As per safety data in the Essential Oils Desk Reference, omit peppermint and thyme for under 18months, and omit peppermint for under 5 year olds.
- 3 drops Ginger
- 3 drops Myrrh
- 2 drops Thyme
- 2 drops Pine
- 2 drops Frankincense
- 4 drops Peppermint
- 50ml base oil, apricot kernel, V6 or olive oil
Use the chest rub over the neck and chest. You may also use the oils in a bowl of hot water for inhalation, the steam assists in loosening the mucous. A warm compress of the same oil blend on the cheeks and forehead will also assist mucous movement. Avoid the eyes.
